FOCUS ON: Lenana Kariba plays Simon on News Just In

Lenana Kung’u Kariba needs no introduction (well not a lot), especially if you are a woman who vividly follows Kenya’s entertainment circles closely. “Pretty boy” is a term that has been used to describe this 28 year old actor and the roles that accompany him pretty much compliment him.

Lenana claims he stumbled into acting but if his roles on Saints, Changing times, Lies that bind, House of Lungula, How to find a husband just to mention but a few are anything to go by, this “Afro man” (never ever touch his afro unless you want to get killed) looks like he was born for the screen.

“I got into drama club because all students had to be in a club in my high school, and drama was the least bad option among the clubs on offer. After school, I escorted a friend for auditions at Kenya National Theatre and ended up auditioning just for the sake after her insistence – but I got the role. So, stumbled is more like it.” He insists.

Nevertheless, a delighted Lenana was excited to land a new role in the new Tv series about to hit your screens, News Just In where he takes up the role of Simon, the main news anchor of a rival channel, until he was recruited by Habari Channel in order to increase the viewing figures of the 9 o clock news. SIMON is a divorcee, a bit of a diva at work but in person he is kind and romantic and therefore not much of a surprise when Justine, the stations director, falls in love with him and maybe (or maybe not), leaves her cheating husband.

News Just In is a comedy TV series surrounding the life of Justine who is juggling between her cheating husband and her job.oh yeah, and this new hunk in the office.

FOCUS ON: Joe Kinyua plays James Were on News Just In

31 year old Joe Kinyua is not a new name in the acting and film world in Kenya. Like many other actors however, you won’t quite describe him as your everyday “celeb” despite him having a very impressive resume. This is probably because Joe likes to keep a low profile out of the public life and limelight that many Kenyan actors should probably enjoy.

How impressive can a Kenyan actors resume get with credits like John Olulu in the Hollywood film the fifth estate e which exposed the work of the Wiki leaks organization. Oulu was a human rights activist investigating police murders in the 2008 crackdown of the outlawed Mungiki sect. He dies in the film but who cares, its Hollywood baby.

Locally, Joe started his acting career doing travelling theatre and numerous stage plays with Festival of Creative Arts (FCA) and Phoenix theatre before getting his TV roles in Briefcase Inc, Guy Centre (remember that show?), Mnet Changes, How to Find a husband plus numerous movies currently showing on Maisha Magic under the Africa Magic Original Films docket.

And now Joe has finally landed a major role in the new TV series about to hit your screens called News Just In which Joe admits is his major TV role as a regular recurring actor in a show.  He will be playing the character James Were, the main news anchor of Habari Channel and JUSTINE’s husband for seven years. He is the ultimate player, flirts with almost every woman around him and changes his mistresses as often as he changes shirts. But when he realizes that his wife fell in love with his rival, he moves away from all the other women and his only focus becomes to win her back.

A humble guy is what one would describe Joe Kinyua with humble beginnings as well. Born in Eastleigh, Joe grew up in Nairobi and attended primary and secondary school in Kasarani. Thereafter, he studied accounting at Visions Professional Institute (2002 -2006) and found a job in that field at the Aga Khan University Hospital where he worked for four years. Until that point, his life was pretty ordinary. Then, while reminiscing about his high school days, he recalled that he had acted in several plays. Indeed, he had pursued his passion for acting at college, and had even joined a youth group that staged plays at several festivals. At one point, he had even produced a low-budget play together with a few of his friends, and it garnered a lot of interest from people. That was when he decided that he wanted to be an actor and producer. He got serious about it and decided to quit his acting job and get into the acting career on a full time basis to which he still enjoys to date.

Her role as Justine in the new TV series about to his your screens is the 1st major on-screen role she has had so far in her acting journey. She recalls attending auditions for Top Actor Africa last year (2015) and in as much as she did not get in, the casting director recommended her to Historia Films who were looking for a lead in their new TV series.

Her role in News Just In is nothing short than demanding but the way she has handled it so far, one would not think she does not have many years of experience. I guess the preliminary training has really helped after all.

NEWS JUST IN – The Trailer

Watch Below:

So what is News Just In all about? Find out

The new co-produced TV series Historia Films and Flick Seven pictures has already started creating a buzz on the internet after its trailer was released. “What is it and why is there so much kissing in it?” were the two main questions arising. Well this article is to answer exactly that.

To set the record straight, it is a tv series, a dramedy and not a movie. No one can blame you for thinking it is a movie because Historia Films (one of the production companies behind this) has largely been known to make movies with titles Like House of Lungula and Fundimentals, these are two successful box office titles. When they decided it’s time to move and take their brave sexy humorous ideas and turn those into a TV series, who best to partner with than Flick Seven pictures to make this dream come true? If people loved the satirical humor that the entertainment industry was given on the big screen by the award winning movies like House of Lungula and Fundimentals, then everybody will love the same dose of humour on the small screen.

If this does not explain the much kissing in the trailer, let us try to highlight what the show is all about. News Just In takes a closer look in the modern working class 21st century woman. It revolves around Justin Nyota (played by Melissa Kiplagat) a news director at a Kenyan TV station “Habari Channel” who is married for 7 years to your everyday team mafisi kind of a husband called JAMES WERE (played by Joe Kinyua) who also happens to be the channel’s main 9 o clock news anchor. Their marriage goes from bad to worse as JUSTINE discovers every so often a new mistress of JAMES.

And while their relationship is in a crisis, the channel board, where JUSTINE’s mother LAVENDA (played by Lizz Njagah) is a member, takes a decision, which will change the balance in the station. Habari Channel will hire a famous broadcaster from a rival channel, the hot cake of the town, the man ladies scream for Mr. SIMON MAMBO (played by Lenana Kariba).

So just to recap;

So just to recap; JUSTINE NYOTA is the news director of a Kenyan TV station called “Habari Channel”. LAVENDA NYOTA, JUSTINE’S mother, became a shareholder in the channel after her husband’s death, who was a founding member of the channel. Drama…family drama!!

JUSTINE is married for 7 years with JAMES WERE, the main news anchor of the channel (huh), who repeatedly cheats on her and still sticks around or does she?

So, low viewership of the 9 o clock news is forcing the channel board to hire (from a rival channel) the popular and handsome news anchor SIMON MAMBO, in order to “upgrade” the newscast that JAMES is presenting. Initially, JUSTINE strongly opposes the recruitment and forces her mother to stop this move but then…she sees Simon and something like a soap opera scene ensues. When she sees here trifling JAMES kissing an intern in the archive room she decides to get her claws into SIMON MAMBO as a way to revenge on her husband….and you can all guess what happens next…right? No. Good, you will just have to watch the series to find out more.

Genre: Intelligent humor.
